Renormalization group approach to the P versus NP question
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper argues that the ideas underlying the renormalization group technique used to characterize phase transitions in condensed matter systems could be useful for distinguishing computational complexity classes. The paper presents a renormalization group transformation that maps an arbitrary Boolean function of N Boolean variables to one of N −1 variables. When this transformation is applied repeatedly, the behavior of the resulting sequence of functions is different for a generic Boolean function than for Boolean functions that can be written as a polynomial of degree ξ with ξ ≪ N as well as for functions that depend on composite variables such as the arithmetic sum of the inputs. Being able to demonstrate that functions are non-generic is of interest because it suggests an avenue for constructing an algorithm capable of demonstrating that a given Boolean function cannot be computed using resources that are bounded by a polynomial of N .

متن کاملA NUMERICAL RENORMALIZATION GROUP APPROACH FOR AN ELECTRON-PHONON INTERACTION
A finite chain calculation in terms of Hubbard X-operators is explored by setting up a vibronic Harniltonian. The model conveniently transformed into a form so that in the case of strong coupling a numerical renormalization group approach is applicable. To test the technique, a one particle Green function is calculated for the model Harniltonian
متن کاملA numerical renormalization group approach for calculating the spectrum of a vibronic system occurring in molecules or impurities in insulators
Theoretically, in order to describe the behavior of a spectrum, a mathematical model whichcould predict the spectrum characteristics is needed. Since in this study a Two-state system has beenused like models which was introduced previously past and could couple with the environment, theformer ideas have been extended in this study. we use the second quantized version for writing thisHamiltonian...
متن کاملTime-Dependent Real-Space Renormalization Group Method
In this paper, using the tight-binding model, we extend the real-space renormalization group method to time-dependent Hamiltonians. We drive the time-dependent recursion relations for the renormalized tight-binding Hamiltonian by decimating selective sites of lattice iteratively. The formalism is then used for the calculation of the local density of electronic states for a one dimensional quant...
متن کامل“Horses for Courses”; Comment on “Translating Evidence Into Healthcare Policy and Practice: Single Versus Multi-Faceted Implementation Strategies – Is There a Simple Answer to a Complex Question?”
This commentary considers the vexed question of whether or not we should be spending time and resources on using multifaceted interventions to undertake implementation of evidence in healthcare. A review of systematic reviews has suggested that simple interventions may be just as effective as those taking a multifaceted approach. Taking cognisance of the Promoting Action on Research Implementat...
